What Constitutes a Dental Emergency?

What Constitutes a Dental Emergency?

In general, a dental emergency is a situation requiring urgent care to relieve a severe toothache, save a tooth, treat an infection, or stop bleeding. Some emergencies require attention at our office, while others can be cared for at home.

If you’re unsure whether you’re experiencing a dental emergency, consider the following questions: Is there severe, persistent tooth pain? Is there a knocked-out, loose, or otherwise damaged tooth? Are there signs of infection, such as swelling or an abscess? Is there bleeding from the mouth? Do you have a broken complete or partial denture? Have you lost a dental crown or filling?

If you’ve answered yes to any of these questions, you likely require urgent dental care. Make sure to contact our office right away.

What Should You Do if You Experience a Dental Emergency?

If you suspect that you are experiencing a dental emergency, call Bridget Singh, DDS, at 206-399-3775. We will evaluate your situation and determine whether we need to see you or if we can offer guidance for handling your situation at home.

Keep in mind that some injuries or dental emergencies may not seem as serious as they are, so if in doubt, please call our office. Without prompt treatment, you risk the chance of developing more serious problems, especially in children.

Note: If you have severe bleeding from the mouth that you can’t stop or if you experience a life-threatening emergency, call 911 for assistance or head to the nearest emergency room.

What Can You Expect During an Emergency Dental Visit?

We will conduct a thorough examination and may take dental x-rays to determine the causes of your pain or the extent of tooth damage. We will also look for signs of gum inflammation or infection, tooth decay or injury, exposed nerves, or lost restorations. Dr. Singh will create a custom treatment plan to address your dental emergency and provide prompt relief.

Before starting treatment, we will use a local anesthetic to numb the affected area. If you have an infected or severely damaged tooth, we may recommend a root canal treatment. If you have a knocked out, loose, or dislodged tooth, we’ll do everything possible to save it and restore its strength, form, and function.
